Performance and Handling
In terms of power and bar size, the Ivation is at the top of the range when it comes to electric chainsaws. This makes it an ideal occasional use, homeowner saw capable of handling a range of light and medium cutting duties around the home and yard. This includes pruning and limbing, as well as felling and bucking small and medium sized trees. With its 16 inch bar it is capable of cutting through a 14 inch diameter log in a single pass, although as with most electric chainsaws, the ease with which it does this depends on the type of wood being cut. User feedback, however, suggests that it cuts well and is comfortably able to cut through 6-8 inch hardwood.
Setting the chainsaw going is both safe and easy. A safety lockout out button is activated and then the throttle trigger can be pressed, firing up the saw immediately. No more mixing gas and oil or dealing with a temperamental gas machine, which means you can get to work immediately. To bring the saw to a halt, the throttle trigger is simply released.
One common theme amongst buyers is that the saw is very easy to handle, has a good weight to power ratio and is also extremely quiet. This makes it perfect for getting on with all those jobs without upsetting your neighbors.
The Ivation is equipped with a 16 inch reduced kickback bar and chain.
Quality here is excellent. The bar is an Oregon reduced kickback Double Guard 91. This has a nose sprocket to help the chain move more easily round the bar. This is a pretty standard feature on most homeowner saws but you will need to remember to grease the bar’s nose hole from time to time. This can be done by injecting grease into the hole with a syringe (these can be purchased for around $10).
The chain is an Oregon S56 semi-chisel chain. This is a low kickback chain which has a 3/8 inch pitch, 0.05 inch gauge and 56 drive links. This may not mean much to you, however, this is the most popular size chain on electric saws.
Keeping the chain properly tensioned when using the saw is critical for good performance and to make sure it doesn’t slip from the bar. Chain tension is easy to maintain on the Ivation, thanks to the side tool-less chain tensioning knob. Many saws require a screwdriver to carry out this task, which can be a little inconvenient if you do not have one close to hand.
The chain will also need to be kept sharp, again to ensure optimum performance. If you are comfortable carry out this task yourself, you will need a 5/32 inch round file and holder. If you would prefer not to do this, you can arrange to have the chains sharpened by an expert locally or invest in a new chain (approx. $13).
Design and Construction
The Ivation 15 Amp Chainsaw is both powerful and well-constructed and a number of users have been surprised by how sturdy the Ivation actually is.
It has a traditional but stylish white design with a half wrap front handle, easily accessible oil cap, comfortable rubber rear grip and a large easy to operate tensioning button.
As with all electric saws it has a short power cord and an appropriate extension cable will therefore be required.
There is a little assembly required (fitting the bar and chain). However, full instructions are provided and no tools are required. It is a pretty simple task and will only take you around five minutes.
Powerful 15 Amp Motor
When it comes to power, the Ivation is at the top of the tree alongside great saws such as the Worx WG304.1 and the Craftsman 4.0HP.
In theory a 15 Amp saw is capable of producing around 2.4HP and although it won’t quite achieve that due to the fact that motors aren’t 100% efficient, it is nevertheless a very powerful saw and comparable to a small gas saw.
As with all electric chainsaws, you will need to use a suitable extension cord and to get the most out of it you should ensure that it has the correct gauge for the length of cord. If, for example, you have a 50 foot cord, it should be at least a 12 gauge. A 10 gauge cord would be even better. You can check out our article here to decide the most appropriate cord.
You will also find the saw much quitter to use, and certainly much cleaner than a typical gas chainsaw. Perfect if you want to stay on friendly terms with your neighbors.
Chain Oil System
You will need to ensure that the cutting equipment is kept properly lubricated, which means adding suitable bar and chain oil to the reservoir.
The Ivation has an automatic oiling system, which means that oil is released automatically when the machine is in operation. Oil can be added through the easily accessible oil cap positioned on top of the power head unit. The manufacturer provides a small bonus bottle of oil with the purchase but you should ideally ensure you have a good supply in stock.
Take care when you are storing the saw as you may find that oil will seep out during storage. This is something which you will find happens with most chainsaws.
The Ivation has a range of excellent safety features, which include:
• Reduced kickback bar and low kickback chain which meet the safety standards of ANSI B.175.1. This doesn’t mean that kickback will be eliminated altogether but it does help to reduce the risk of it occurring.
• Front and rear hand cards to protect the hands from both the chain and flying debris.
• Safe starting system. A lock off button must be activated before the throttle trigger can be depressed.
• Metal bumper spikes which provide stability when cutting.
This is a pretty safe saw to use provided that you follow the instructions and wear the appropriate safety gear (such as gloves and eyewear).t here...
The saw weighs around 13lbs. This is heavier than many smaller electric saws but compares with similar products in its class. The weight reflects the quality of build and if you are used to handling power tools you shouldn’t have any problem with this.
- Well priced compared to other 15 Amp electric chainsaws
- Tool-less chain tensioning system
- Automatic Oiling system
- Not a well-known, proven brand
You should buy this saw if:

There are under 50 consumer ratings online, which means that it is difficult to draw too many conclusions. However, the ratings which have been given are pretty positive with over 90% of people rating it as either good or excellent.
Price of Ivation Electric Chainsaw
Currently priced at well under $100, we believe the Ivation 16-inch 15 Amp electric Chainsaw represents excellent value. There are certainly higher more well-known and popular branded saws on the market, but you will pay extra for one of these.
